And That’s a Wrap

In the cult movies film class, we have read about 45 readings, pondered 20 presentations about films, watched 14 screenings, and made a presentation of our very own. This class was eyeopening to the world of cult cinema and really taught me to ponder movies more than just watching them but, most of all it taught me a film is more than its bad acting.

A movie can show very valuable information about a time period, its actors and, most importantly its director. Most of the time cult fans will love a director so much they go watch anything the direct *cough cough* john waters *cough cough*. Which is what makes cult fandom so unique it doesn’t follow any rules it simply praises the unpraised. It lets the underdog rising up through the rubble of losing lots of money to turn it around in midnight shows and extravagant events.

My favorite film in this class was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood it was Quentin Tarintino’s best. Not only is the character development perfect but the movie itself perfectly takes on the role of being back in old Hollywood. Actors take on other actors’ styles and he even makes up a movie so that foreshadowing could occur. Have you ever seen any other director make up any an entire movie for some foreshadowing? Everything is planned out to a T. Even the posters and titles at the movies were planned out perfectly. Most importantly it showed Sharon Tate living her life and if Sharon Tate watching her movie in an audience full of her fans doesn’t give you the feel-good I’m about to cry feeling unlike any movie you’ve ever watched I don’t know what will. Even the soundtrack in the movie gives subtext to the movie. Incorporating people just driving around not only shows there humanity but also allows the viewers to have a break.

Tarantino has really outdone himself this time and we’re not complaining from flame throwers to Bruce Lee Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will not disappoint. My favorite thing about this movie is that it gives Manson the attention he deserves which is no attention at all. It turns this Monster of a man into a cameo. Which is why I think this movie will go down in cult history. I don’t think any other director could have made this movie. He even does goes against the rules of film making in the 21st century by having long cuts instead of 3-second cuts that most films that come of these days have. Which for me concrets the idea of this movie being made in the 60s and 70s. All in all this movie was a home run and we couldn’t have finished the semester with a better film.

To be completely honest I wouldn’t change a thing on the syllabus I feel like the semester was balanced perfectly. Some movies are better than others but the movies that were bad weren’t really that bad and they usually have useful information or great points to bring up. I don’t really think that I would switch any movies out but I do think that you should add in a series. Either a movie in a sequel or a season of a show something like that where it’s not just one show but there’s the development of character I also feel like this would help to play it more tropes, but that’s just my opinion and you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

Video Essay ie I hate Technology

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1edhnL_5x89Pv9PGuBQ23VjO7pesaaY1b/view?ts=5ea8c273

So this video is bad quality and so is the audio because for so reason iMovie wouldn’t let me export it in any way so I had to screen record the video and the audio and edit them back together and then upload load it to google drive. If you guys want I can screen share it next week so you can see and hear it better but sadly technology has failed me and this was the best I could come up with to solve the problem.

Matinee more like not today

Due to unforeseen technical problems, I was unable to be involved in the last hour of class and missed the last presentations. I am very sad about this but from what I have read so far they seem great! 🙂 This week’s movie was Matinee and it really drove me into a happy depression as if I was replaying the memories of a loved one. Going to the movies was a huge part of my childhood and young adult life and is even a thanksgiving tradition in my family. download (2).jpegI was in a Deja Vu moment for half the movie replaying all of my favorite movie theatre experiences.  Some of my first dates, spending time with my family, spending time with my friends, and even a crazy gimmicky moment when a mermaid in the movie walked into the theatre and gave everyone free candy shell necklaces. Could you ask for anything more? I don’t think I would have reminisced as much if I had gone right before this pandemic happened but it feels as if I haven’t gone in years due to Alfred’s limited theatre selection.  I thought the way the main character describes this experience at movies was a rather refreshing view. I also felt rather connected but also discounted to the film and at the same time because we are in very similar situations but also very different. A pandemic and a missile crisis are similar but disease and bombs are too very different things. Overall I thought it was a great way to round out the semester before our last viewing and our last blog.download.jpeg

The readings for this week were eye-opening I especially liked Castles gimmicks. I had never really thought of this to be a tool and film directors and producers could use to engage there audiences more. I wasn’t for personal gain but to help the audience have a more indulgent viewing experience. It really connected back on some of the other readings we’ve had throughout the semester such as the Alamo draft house where they used a similar gimmicky tactic to draw their audience in. Overall I miss being in our “midnight movie” class setting where people would be reacting to other people reacting to the movie.  In my personal opinion having this class online really takes the fun out of watching these somewhat horrible but also great, extremely entertaining movies with all of you. download (1).jpeg

Cinderella forgot her heroin

Everyone knows the classic love story where the girl unexpectedly meets the boy of her dreams they have their ups and downs but it’s nothing that they can’t solve with a hug and a kiss. This wacky romantic perfect ending story that we all know way too well.  This love story has been engraved into our brains since the day we are born. Sid and Nancy is a different story, a real story where you see the nitty and gritty even when you don’t want to. You see the toxicity addiction and dysfunctional love. Being in a toxic relationship it’s hard you have really high highs and really low lows. You can never get out of them and if you do it’s very hard because even when you’re at those very low moments who can forget those high moments. Sid and Nancy depict this better than any movie I’ve ever seen. They don’t sugarcoat it like all the other movies so you see who the main characters truly are. I’m not gonna lie, this movie is very hard to watch and I don’t think I’ll be watching it again. It’s not because the movie is not a beautiful movie, this movie is beautifully shot and has a great soundtrack but is hard to see. Especially in this time when we don’t wanna see any more reality then we are already getting. As I can tell my mom every day I only want to hear three bad things today so that I can hold onto the shred of happiness I still have left.

The readings that went along with this movie you’re more enlightening then sad it almost helped me tie this movie With the drugs and the fans and the rock and roll Back to cult cinema in a way. It helped me figure out why cult cinema was using these drugs to convey emotion. Which really brought out the audience because I’ve never really seen a film like this A film that showed everything. You can choose whether this is a good or bad thing for yourself. I personally think it’s a movie worth watching at least once.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

*POSTED LATE WITH PROFESSORS PERMISSION*

valerie.jpeg

This viewing is exactly what I needed a confusing distraction leading my mind awake from the harsh realities of life and leading to the mind-boggling cinematic thrill that is Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. The film is a beautiful rendition of a young woman blossoming into womanhood and what comes along with that. The readings really helped to expand my knowledge of what the director was doing what is very short cuts in quick edits to help keep the viewer in the viewpoint of being almost enchanted. The score that also went wrong with the film was so beautiful you couldn’t help to think that you were in a magical place. The plot was all in all confusing and the readings did not clear up any questions or clarify any of the plot and discrepancies but when the director did this he left it completely up to the audience to interpret this and the way they wanted to. it’s a “loose plot“ which I find more appealing than a plot that tells you exactly what’s gonna happen is exactly why it happened. All in all, it was a beautiful film and I had a lot of fun watching it with all my family members. my dad just kept yelling at the TV say what’s going on I don’t understand I guess he doesn’t like foreign films.  All in all, it was funny to watch and funny to watch people’s reactions while watching it.

This movie also surprisingly tackled a lot of troops in the cult film world such as the fantasy trough the blossoming into womanhood troll on the older woman had a few tropes as associated with her character and I felt that the movie was really using these tropes to there advantage. Such as putting blood on a flower to be compared to a young woman turning into womanhood and also using a priest as the bad character in the film.

We also had a few presentations this week one was about blade runner which I found particularly interesting so I went to go watch the movie and I was blown away. It in a way is kind of like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders because it keeps you one your toes the whole time second-guessing yourself the whole time on what’s happening.

The way the movie used light was particularly interesting to me at certain points in the movie there was a certain light used and in more dramatic points of the movie there were other lights used and throughout the movie, the characters would get into darker life and some characters we are placed in brighter light I thought it was particularly beautiful the way the director uses this method of filming.

Blacula

For this weeks movie we watched Blacula witch is A film about an African-American Dragula this movie is all about breaking the troops that revolve around African-American roles in film and media. Not only does Blacula only transform African-Americans and homosexuals he also acts in a different manner than most African-American roles would portray him as. I really liked this movie I felt like it was very moving there was a couple of parts where Blaxploitation came into play but I felt as if the movie really helped audiences to understand the differences between OK and not OK rules for African-Americans to play. Not only did this movie try to fight unjust rolls it also fought against usual stereotypes around homophobic pretenses Such as “ they all look the same”.  where in reality they did not all look the same but the people saying this looked exactly the same to each other because they were wearing the same uniform.

We also had a beautiful presentation about paranormal activity which I thought it went very well Sam talked about Key elements to the movie and why it was a cult movie. I for one have not seen this movie because I don’t watch scary movies just because I was raised in a very religious household where demons were of the real thing and movies like this always freak me out because my mom would always be like that can really happen. I know how that that is not the case but they still kind of give me the heebie-jeebies And Sam did such a great presentation that I even went home and watched it. I thought it was so good and weird that I am now basing one of my photo books off of this movie.

The readings we went over this week were a lot blaxploitation and the role that African-Americans used to play in movies and the unjust light that they were portrayed in which I feel really help me to contextualize Blacula and further my understanding of an OK and a not OK role for African-Americans to play. The reading that really hit me the week was the reading about the media and marketing behind cult movies and how if you try to categorize yourself as a cult movie you will inherently be not a cult movie and just a bad movie. I thought this to be absolutely hilarious because The audience wants what it wants and what are we to tell it what it is and what it is not that all for us to decide. Which I think as an audience member is a very great power to have.

Pink Flamingos

***POSTED LATE WITH PERMISSION FROM PROFESSOR****

Usually, during a blockbuster movie, you create an attachment with a character. Such as in Finding Nemo you create a connection with each of the main “do-good” Characters. However, in gore movies or in a movie like pink flamingos it is very hard to create connections with the characters due to the atrocities there committing such as cannibalism,  chicken sex, impregnating women against there will, etc.  Due to bad acting and these very weird occurrences, this movie is unlike any other movie I’ve watched. There’s no good guy or a bad guy or underlining mean there’s just bad guys and worse bad guys. This is why I believe this movie gained such a huge cult following.

Pink Flamingos had a storyline and a plot thrill like no other. Most movies are semi-predictable but when watching this movie I truly didn’t know what was coming next. This is what I believe helped shoot Pink Flamingos into stardom in the midnight movie realm.

Image result for pink flamingo the cult movie qoutes

To be totally honest this is a movie I wouldn’t intend on watching with a classroom full of people I don’t believe I could have stomached this whole movie by myself at home. Which I didn’t really feel until I got to the cannibal scene. This isn’t just because of the context of this movie but most movies that have extreme gore I just can’t watch it makes me too queasy. The thing I think that made me keep watching was the bad acting and ultimate hilariousness of the movie. It just was too Taboo for me. It was almost as if they wanted the audience members to be disturbed but not so disturbed they wouldn’t watch it. In my opinion, I was thinking to myself no one would actually do any of these things. It is just to get a rise out of the audience so they would go tell their friends “ yeah I watched this movie last night that had a singing butthole in it.”

This leads me to believe that the director went with the transgression and freakery method of entertaining. Such as showing bodily fluids and or inhumane ways of acting to create a rising out of the audience leaving a memorable experience not only for the viewers but the people they went to see it with. Creating a rise or stir out of the community. This leaves the communities with there hunger for taboo subjects quenched and allows the audience to see the unseeable. Without actually having to go out and do it themselves. Which all in all is why a cult movie is created. To give the viewer something there craving. Without them knowing there craving it.

Exploitation in Hollywood

Exploitation Has been used by Hollywood’s biggest and smallest theatres to captivate audiences by using taboo subject matters such as childbirth, nudity, violence, and gore. The films that took advantage of the taboo was cult cinema using everything and anything they could to make money and draw in a huge following. even movies that didn’t make much sense like the movie “Manic”. Which had a very loose plot and didn’t introduce hardly any of its characters. It also randomly cut to animals fighting and most likely only gained such a huge following due to the fact that it depicted the horrible and tragic suicide crisis at that time. This is how the movie still attainted a pretty big following due to the writers’ and directors’ exploitation of that time periods audience.maniac.jpeg

The documentary movie “American Grindhouse” depicts the movies and the time periods they were taking place it. It also does a very great job of showing how the movie industry changed over time and why. For instance, Nudity Starting phasing out of theatres when American teen movies starting coming out depicting rebellious America that no one had seen before. Then once that genre was overplayed the audience started craving more so gore started to arise. It also talks about how the ever-changing economics of America really played into the factors of the ratings and which movies would become cult movies.

I personally thought that both movies were intriguing in their own ways for instance “manic” showed me what a bad movie looked like. “American Grindhouse” showed me the transformations a the movie industry and not only the genres but all the legality and the changes involved in cinema at different time periods. I can’t wait to see more.
