Classics’ through and through. CULTCEPTION

Ya know I went in to this class anxious and nervous about how hard this class was going to be blah blah blah what does cult film mean blah blah blah– well look at me now I know what it means for a film to be cult, and this class was a damn joyride. I thought it was going to be a fun class with a cool and engaging professor (as preached top me by Tallula in the fall) that was with all my friends, and about movies duh. It was everything more than that, even more so that I am going to take intro to film in the fall. I haven’t had a class outside of the Art & Design college that was this fantastic. Schlegel is structured and personable, and makes for an extremely comfortable learning environment.

As I have in previous blogs, I could most defiantly go off about why these were my favorite movies shown in the class (IN BENEFIT OF THIS CLASS)

My favorite screenings

  • Carnival of Souls
  • The Warriors
  • Pink Flamingos

My least favorite screenings

  • Detroit Rock City
  • Matinee
  • Sid and Nancy

I didn’t recognize most of the films on the syllabus in January, and now in May I am considering at least three of these UP there on the movie ranking list in my head. They have greatly impacted my taste in movies, and changed my opinion about what I think makes a “good” movie. We discussed so many intriguing topics that the ins and outs of cult cinema. Specifically consumption and taste, which are vital when declaring the status of a cult film.

I was attracted to the films for all sorts of different reasons, especially with our readings (what seems like super secret insider information). Suspiria I was fascinated by the use of color and how magical it was to watch. Pink Flamingos was great because of how obscene it was, its funny because I said this ” I had to keep reminding myself that this movie was made to offend, and though I was trying not to be, it was unavoidable, this movie was fucking gross and horrific at some points. IM SORRY but who has the nerve to make the viewing of someone being raped with a bloody chicken in a barn… comical? But again it was made to make me feel these types of ways, which also angers me.”

I am so sad for this class to be coming to and end, I have so many thanks. Everyone did amazing on their presentations, our apparent passion for film shone through during each. Again big shout out to Schlegel for being NO.1 prof in Alfred, you kept us going during quarantine. We had great laughs and as a class and I cant wait to see everyone again in the fall. Dont stop watching movies and stay positive bubs!

Hey Mia, I’m so glad that you enjoyed this class! I totally agree with your list of favorite movies and least favorite movies. I also didn’t like Sid and Nancy that much. I understood the appeal, but it didn’t hit like I think it should have.
